“On August 12, 2016, everything changed. I’m Katherine Brettell, the youngest of four kids in a sports-loving family with supportive parents. My sister Emily unexpectedly passed away at 17. I was just 12 years old. Coping with her loss was excruciating, and I felt isolated at school.
My family struggled to find the professional help we needed. I even contemplated suicide at 13 due to the trauma. My grief eventually led to a physical health crisis, conversion disorder, which caused daily seizures.
I wish we could have found the professional help we needed. Unfortunately, I had to relive my experience with each counselor, which further exacerbated my grief. My dad learned about “Camp Keaton,” a bereavement camp for grieving children and teens. I attended in 2017 and it had a profound impact.
Life has continued, with my siblings moving forward. I’m now in college, studying to become a social services worker.
At 18, I returned to Camp Keaton as a cabin big buddy, one of the most rewarding experiences born from my grief. We need more accessible grief support for families.”
